The German-language opera Lulu is a 20th century work in three acts by Alban Berg. This aria from the opera is known as one of the most notoriously difficult pieces in the repertory, for both the singer and the pianist, partly because it is based on the twelve-tone technique, developed by Berg's teacher Arnold Schoenberg. However, rather than using one tone row for the entire opera, he gives each character his or her own tone row, essentially creating a leitmotif (reminiscent of R. Wagner) for each persona. Lulu’s tone row is shown below.
The Westminster CoOPERAtive Program, Westminster Choir College’s three-week intensive opera training program, features emerging artists in workshops, recitals, and concerts. The program brings to Princeton some of the most influential people in the operatic field today to serve on its faculty and hold master classes.
